A modest increase in the levels of divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1), which imports ferrous iron to the cytosol, was observed in the ipsilateral hemisphere of the ischemic stroke mice only (Figure 2A); no changes were observed in the levels of transferrin receptor (TfR) (Figure 2A,B), which plays a pivotal role as the main gate for iron entry into the endothelial cells of the brain capillaries and into neurons; also, TfR has recently been identified as a ferroptosis biomarker [27]. The gene discussed is SLC11A2; the disease is ischemic stroke.
