International collaboration accelerated COVID-19 vaccine development and within the European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA), by the end of December 2021, there were five COVID-19 vaccines authorised for use with conditional marketing [1,2]: two are spike protein-based mRNA vaccines: Comirnaty (BNT162b2; Pfizer-BioNTech) and Spikevax (mRNA-1273; Moderna); two are spike-protein-based adenoviral vector vaccines: Vaxzevria (ChAdOx1; AstraZeneca) and Jcovden (Ad26.COV 2.5; Johnson & Johnson); one is a subunit vaccine: Nuvaxovid (NVX-CoV2373; Novavax).
