The phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) signaling is also compromised in AD neurons [28, 29], and Aβ deposition inhibits PI3K/Akt activation, thus triggering the expression of pro-apoptotic factors, such as glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3β) and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), resulting in neuronal apoptosis [30].
