Proinflammatory cytokines are known to play a role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease; IL‐1, IL‐6, IL‐8, IL‐11, IL‐12, IL‐15, IL17, IL‐121, IL‐22, IL‐23, IL‐32, TNF‐α, and prostaglandin E2, anti‐inflammatory cytokines are IL‐1Ra, IL‐4, IL‐10, IL‐12, IL‐13, IL‐18, IL‐27, IL‐33, interferon (IFN)‐α, IFN‐β, and transforming growth factor‐β (Dinarello, 2000; Takashiba et al., 2003).
