Alzheimer’s disease patients with epileptiform abnormalities have an increased rate of cognitive decline and reduced survival.12,13 There is an increased risk of seizures in patients with early onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer’s disease with mutations in APP and presenilin,34,35 suggesting that amyloid deposition is required for expression of the epileptiform Alzheimer’s disease phenotype. This evidence concerns the gene APP and Alzheimer disease.
