In animal studies, noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has been shown to decrease AHN and impair memory (Kraus et al., 2010;Liu et al., 2016; Shukla et al., 2019), with these effects persisting up to 12 months after noise exposure evidenced by increased hippocampal tau-phosphorylation, which may inhibit AHN (Pristera et al., 2013; Komuro et al., 2015; Park et al., 2018; Houben et al., 2019).
