MMP2 has been shown to be directly regulated by STAT3, and examination of ChIP-seq data from MDA-MB-231 cells showed that STAT3 binds to the 5’ region near the MMP2 promoter.43,61,62 Additionally, recent data have characterized the role of MMP2 in invasive breast cancer and metastatic melanoma and demonstrated a correlation between STAT3 activity and MMP2 expression.61,63,64 Coincidentally, Schmidt et al. identified a loss of MMP2 expression following knockdown of FAM3C in human breast cancer cells.65 This evidence concerns the gene MMP2 and breast carcinoma.
