The clinical significance of the cytokine storm in hospitalized severe COVID-19 cases was highlighted by Chen et al., who showed that patients with severe disease defined as respiratory rate > 30 per minute, percutaneous oxygen saturation of 93% or lower or need for high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) or non-invasive ventilation (NIV) had higher levels of IL2-R, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α [9].
