This notion of increased DNA damage and a reduced DNA damage repair capacity was further supported by an Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA; QIAGEN) that included 461 differentially expressed genes across patient and xenograft tumors (diabetic versus nondiabetic; Supplemental Table 9), showing that “the role of BRCA1 in DNA damage response” is the top downregulated IPA-defined process in presence of diabetes (Figure 8, A and B). This evidence concerns the gene BRCA1 and diabetes mellitus.
