NRG1 and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: These findings combined with similar results obtained using GlyB4 in the SOD1 ALS model (Liu et al., 2018) suggests that while NRG1 signaling produces a significant clustering morphology (a pathologic phenotype), blocking NRG1 before the onset of plaque deposition leads to changes in microglia morphology and activity “upstream” from the neurodegenerative process that transforms microglial into a less pathogenic phenotype.
