While the presence of PI-1 and PI-2b genes is noted in most of the type III/CC17 GBS isolates [36,37], our data showed that the presence of ICESag37, carrying multiple virulence genes and replacing the PI-1, is correlated with the clonal expansion of antibiotic-resistant type III/CC17 GBS strains, which may be associated with the occurrence of meningitis [19]. The gene discussed is SERPINA1; the disease is infectious meningitis.
