Elevated plasma levels of PAI-1 [77], which is a major inhibitor of fibrinolysis, and α2AP [78,79], which is a plasmin inhibitor, have been identified in those with diabetes, whereas increased incorporation of α2AP and C3 into fibrin clots has been documented in patients with T1D [80,81,82], increasing clot resistance to lysis. Here, C3 is linked to diabetes mellitus.
