Studies have shown an association between early onset hyperglycemia and a higher rate of complications associated with prematurity, i.e., intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), leading to increased morbidity and mortality in extremely preterm infants [4,10,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31] .The tight control of glucose levels is, therefore, of the utmost importance, as well as starting insulin infusion when the level exceeds a certain threshold [10,19,32]. This evidence concerns the gene INS and necrotizing enterocolitis.
