An acute reduction in renal Klotho mRNA and protein abundance has been detected in several experimental models of AKI, including sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection [29,51,52], and the reduction in plasma Klotho paralleled the decrease in renal Klotho mRNA/protein in experimental AKI [30]. This evidence concerns the gene KL and acute kidney injury.
