BECN1 and lung cancer: In addition to its involvement in autophagy, endocytosis, and phagocytosis (Zhu and He, 2015), Beclin-1 is also involved in the regulation of cell apoptosis and is expressed in various diseases, such as lung cancer (Zheng et al., 2020), colon cancer (Zhang et al., 2014), ovarian cancer (Cai et al., 2014), etc. Moreover, Beclin 1 is required for apoptotic cell engulfment and to coordinate actin dynamics and membrane phospholipid synthesis to promote efficient apoptotic cell engulfment (Konishi et al., 2012).
