While Calpain-3 (CAPN3) is an intracellular cysteine protease, it has been shown in human melanoma that a variant of this gene called hMp84 increases the intracellular production of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) leading to DNA damage45 which has been also confirmed in Theileria to cause an oxidative stress by elevation of ROS and disruption of the redox balance which are required for parasite transformation46. The gene discussed is CAPN3; the disease is melanoma.
