IL6 and COVID-19: Markedly raised levels of inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein, ferritin, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and other cytokines are observed in severe cases and are associated with poor outcomes.3, 4 Corticosteroids, IL-6 inhibitors, and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors have been shown to reduce mortality in patients with severe COVID-19.5, 6, 7 Together, these results show that inflammation is modifiable and anti-inflammatory therapy can improve clinical outcomes.
