KL and Duchenne muscular dystrophy: Similarly, overexpression of klotho in the mdx mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy increased satellite cell numbers and prevented muscle atrophy that occurs in late stages of the disease (Wehling‐Henricks et al., 2016) and elevated Klotho levels increased numbers of satellite cells and accelerated muscle growth following acute injury (Welc et al., 2020) and improved regeneration of injured, aged muscle (Sahu et al., 2018).
