During periodontal tissue destruction, initiated by specific bacteria, the cytokine network plays a crucial role on the recruitment of specific immunocytes, control of pathobionts, and release of cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α).12, 13Additionally, specific positive correlation between IL-1β and TNF-α in chronic periodontitis patients have also been reported.14 This evidence concerns the gene IL1B and periodontitis.
