To distinguish between primary decreases in NEP activity that might contribute to Aβ accumulation and decreases secondary to neurodegenerative changes in AD, NEP levels and activity were significantly increased in AD stages but negatively with age in AD patients, suggesting that reduction in NEP activity is not the primary cause of Aβ accumulation in AD, but rather a late‐stage phenomenon secondary to neurodegeneration.37 The gene discussed is MME; the disease is Alzheimer disease.
