HIF1A and cancer: HIF-1α is implicated in mutation in tumor suppressor genes like VHL, p53 and expression of oncogenes like Akt and Ras alter the angiogenic switch (enhances VEGF expression) resulting in neovascularization in low oxygen concentration that promotes growth, metastasis, and invasion of tumoral cells resulting in poor outcome in cancer therapy and increased mortality [6,8-11].
