Additional future studies with the db/db P-407 mouse model will explore the dual role that Müller cells play in the development of DR, especially as it pertains to the dysfunction of specific growth factors (e.g., bFGF and VEGF) during a state of dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia, and how this interplay contributes to a decline in retinal function, vision loss, BRB breakdown, and the development of early-stage DR. The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is metabolic syndrome.
