SOD2 and colitis: In the same study, these researchers showed that the experimental induction of mitochondrial ROS in the colon by treatment with rotenone (mitochondrial complex I-specific inhibitor) or deletion of the Sod2 (superoxide dismutase 2, mitochondrial) gene exacerbated experimental colitis in mice and ameliorated colitis by treatment with a mitochondrial-specific antioxidant (e.g., MitoQ), confirming the role of mitochondrial ROS in colitis.
