TPO and autoimmune thyroid disease: In the natural course of GD, hypothyroidism may develop, with varying degrees depending on follow-up.7–11 A possible explanation for the higher prevalence of levothyroxine prescriptions post-ATD treatment in women compared with men is that women are more prone to thyroid autoimmunity in the form of elevated TPO-antibodies.30–33 The presence of blocking TRAbs34 may theoretically influence the prevalence of hypothyroidism post-ATD treatment, although gender differences in TRAb blocking activity remain to be elucidated.
