An in vitro study incubated human hepatoma cells with UA for 24 or 48 h in the presence of GH and observed a 21% and 26% reduction, respectively, in GH-stimulated IGF-1 mRNA expression (P = 0.020 and P = 0.012, respectively), suggesting that exposure of human hepatoma cells to UA impairs the ability of GH to stimulate JAK2-STAT5 signaling (9). The gene discussed is IGF1; the disease is hepatocellular carcinoma.
