Lactoferrin receptor (LfR) is highly expressed on the apical surface of respiratory epithelial cells, as well as in brain endothelial cells and neurons, and is particularly overexpressed in capillaries and neurons associated with age-related neurodegenerative diseases, including AD, Parkinson’s disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) [144]. This evidence concerns the gene ITLN1 and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
