In detail, F. nuclatum and P. gingivalis have been proven to enhance local inflammation at periodontal sites, thus exacerbating the production of those inflammatory cytokines previously described as associated with OSCC developments, mainly IL-6, TNF-α, and MMP-9, responsible for tissue dissolution and cancer progression, and proven to be overexpressed in OSCC [171,184,210]. The gene discussed is MMP9; the disease is cancer.
