Recent work on gestational diabetes mellitus, a top risk factor for the later development of type 2 diabetes, have shown on 1035 participants of the SWIFT cohort with gestational diabetes that reduced sphingolipid metabolism, mainly related with CerS2 and CerS4 genes, was highly associated with the development of type 2 diabetes in patients with gestational diabetes [136]. This evidence concerns the gene CERS4 and gestational diabetes.
