Epithelial cells in periodontitis increasingly express chemokines, including chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL1), critical for recruiting neutrophils [20,21], and it is the neutrophil extracellular traps and histones triggering the early catabolic environment of periodontitis [22]. This evidence concerns the gene CXCL1 and periodontitis.
