Considering the fact that Cx40 and Cx43 were strongly expressed in the muscle layers of the stomach [44,45], which are also the most severely affected regions of the gastric wall in SSc [46], further studies on full-thickness biopsies of the stomach could elucidate whether these proteins are altered in SSc in a comparable manner to the changes found in the myocardium. This evidence concerns the gene GJA1 and systemic sclerosis.
