DES and Desminopathy: Considering several lines of evidence, it could be hypothesized that oxidative stress arising from several muscle diseases, including desminopathies, could contribute to desmin C333 oxidation, which could initially mediate desmin protective reorganization, but when excessive, it could contribute together with other posttranslational modifications, such as phosphorylation and cleavage, to uncontrolled aggregation and deleterious effects.
