Given that some existing cancer therapies target protein synthesis pathways (e.g. mTOR inhibitors42), we propose that future studies should investigate whether speckle signature predicts patient responses to particular therapeutic agents, hypothesizing that, across many cancer types, the strong enrichment of ribosome protein gene expression in speckle Signature I tumors renders them more sensitive to mTOR inhibition or other therapies targeting metabolism and protein production.
