CD8A and systemic lupus erythematosus: The crosstalk between the circulating and tissue-resident cytotoxic CD8+ T cells and widespread tissue destruction including skin, spleen, and kidney, as well as systemic and tissue inflammation, clearly evident in our xenogeneic lupus model, is supported by the published data where local cytokine, chemokine, and adhesion molecule production has been shown to encourage the further influx of inflammatory cells and the production of proinflammatory cytokines, ultimately resulting in tissue inflammation, tissue injury, and, eventually, fibrosis (56).
