IL17A and systemic lupus erythematosus: Lupus nephritis (LN), a fatal complication of SLE, is thought to be caused by an inflammatory response to immunogenic, endogenous chromatin and driven by the autoreactive leukocytes, immune complexes (ICs), and IL-17-producing T helper 17 cells (TH17 cells) in collaboration with various cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors, where the treatment usually consists of immunosuppressive therapy including steroids (7).
