Hydroxynonenal detoxification by glutathione S-transferases declines due to age-dependent enzyme depletion (Schaur et al., 2015); glutathione S-transferase activity decreases in the hippocampus of Alzheimer brain (Lovell et al., 1998), and brain levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase also decrease in Alzheimer’s disease (Sultana et al., 2013). Here, HPGDS is linked to early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
