We speculate that neuronal death in Alzheimer’s disease is essentially not degenerative but ischemic in nature, being caused synergically by the excessive intake of ω-6 PUFA-rich vegetable oils for oxidizing Hsp70.1 and long-standing brain ischemia due to age-dependent arteriosclerosis or Aβ deposition in the capillary wall to facilitate μ-calpain activation. The gene discussed is CAPN2; the disease is early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
