Acute severe cases of UC requiring inpatient admission are defined by the modified Truelove and Witts criteria as severe diarrhoea (at least six episodes a day) with macroscopic blood in the stool, fever (temperature > 37.5 degrees), tachycardia (HR > 90), anaemia (Hb < 75) and ESR > 30 [4], although CRP is now used in current practice as it is not elevated in the elderly and is thus easier to define reducing CRP as disease remission [5]. Here, CRP is linked to anemia.
