It has been described that regression of liver fibrosis is accompanied by a decrease of pro-inflammatory cytokines [interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-1β, and transforming necrosis factor α (TNF-α)] and transforming growth factor β (TGF-β1) in the liver, and abrogation of ECM formation due to the production of collagen fibers-degrading MMPs [23].
