Many cytokines found to be dampened in Orai1 cKO astrocytes including IL-1α, IL-33, TNFα, IL-6, and MCP1 are implicated in mediating neuroinflammation in disease states such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and stroke53,55 suggesting that Orai1-driven astrocyte activation may have a role in exacerbating neurological disease. The gene discussed is IL1A; the disease is early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
