This association among COVID-19, AKI and death might be explained by the fact that the genes encoding angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and cellular transmembrane serine proteases (TMPRSS), one of the most important mediators of SARS-CoV-2 entry into host cells, are highly coexpressed in kidney podocytes and proximal tubule cells, which have been identified as candidate host cells (9, 11). The gene discussed is ACE2; the disease is acute kidney injury.
