This association among COVID-19, AKI and death might be explained by the fact that the genes encoding angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and cellular transmembrane serine proteases (TMPRSS), one of the most important mediators of SARS-CoV-2 entry into host cells, are highly coexpressed in kidney podocytes and proximal tubule cells, which have been identified as candidate host cells (9, 11). This evidence concerns the gene ACE2 and COVID-19.
