METTL3 is also elevated in podocytes from renal biopsies from patients with diabetic nephropathy, while METTL3 knockout reduced the m6A levels of TIMP metallopeptidase inhibitor 2 (TIMP2) and downregulated its expression, which led to clear alleviation of inflammation and apoptosis via the Notch pathway in podocytes (79).
