At first sight, it may be somewhat confusing that two, apparently contradictory, statements coexist: that obesity as such drives activation of brown adipose tissue recruitment and increases in UCP1 amounts, i.e. leading to diet-induced thermogenesis (as seen above), and that obesity may rather be caused by lowered brown adipose tissue activity. Here, UCP1 is linked to obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
