Gene rearrangements, namely anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK), are among the plethora of addictive fusion oncogene mutations which have modernized the concept of personalized medicine regarding NSCLC: found in roughly 4% of NSCLC patients, the most common rearrangement occurs following the fusion between the 5′ portion of the echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4 (EML4) gene and the 3′ portion of the ALK gene [4–6]. The gene discussed is EML4; the disease is non-small cell lung carcinoma.
