10 Staphylococcal colonization mightbe related to changes in skin pH and low levels of ceramides and antimicrobialpeptides.5 There is also a correlationbetween a mutation in the filaggrin gene (FLG) andincreased S. aureus colonization onthe skin of AD patients.11 Many cohortstudies have demonstrated that 25–50% of AD patients possessa mutation in the FLG gene.12 Filaggrin is a key protein that maintains proper hydration and epidermalintegrity by cross-linking keratin filaments. This evidence concerns the gene FLG and Alzheimer disease.
