We have recently uncovered an increase in CSPG2 and PGCA in stented porcine coronary arteries.31 Proteases of the ADAMTS (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs) family partly control the accumulation of large proteoglycans after vascular injury.29 Proteoglycan deposition could represent a missing link between lipoprotein retention and hemodynamics, consistent with the known predilection sites for atherosclerosis. The gene discussed is VCAN; the disease is atherosclerosis.
