Whereas Ly6C−CX3CR1hi patrolling monocytes are involved in CMV dissemination in the mouse (Daley‐Bauer et al, 2014), Ly6C+CCR2+ inflammatory monocytes can engage antiviral responses in early infection via direct or indirect mechanisms (Salazar‐Mather et al, 2002; Hokeness et al, 2005; Soudja et al, 2012; Rovis et al, 2016; Gawish et al, 2019).
