Notably, in vivo or in vitro data show that USP14 promotes NAFLD progression in a cytochrome p4502E1 (CYP2E1)-dependent manner, which exacerbates hepatocyte oxidative stress, impairs the mitochondrial respiratory chain and inflammation by promoting CYP2E1 protein levels. Here, CYP2E1 is linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
