Notably, a large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified specific DNA sequence variants, including Patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing 3 (PNPLA3, rs738409-G), Glucokinase regulator (GCKR, rs780094-T), and Lysophospholipase-like 1 (LYPLAL1, rs12137855-C) that were associated with computed tomography-defined steatosis and biopsy-proven NAFLD characterized by lobular inflammation and fibrosis [43]. This evidence concerns the gene PNPLA3 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
