The absence of EpCAM in the serum-derived exosomes from breast cancer can be explained by the cleavage of EpCAM by serum metalloproteinases and the fact that both CD24 and EpCAM are not present in the same EV populations, which was confirmed in this study after the immunoaffinity purification of exosomes using anti-EpCAM beads [206]. This evidence concerns the gene CD24 and breast carcinoma.
