SMPD1 and anterior segment dysgenesis: The analysis of the expression of genes involved in sphingomyelin metabolism in ASMD type B versus control organoids showed a significant reduction in ASMD type B organoids in the expression of the SMPD1 gene coding for the enzyme acid sphingomyelinase (ASM), responsible for the degradation of sphingomyelin to ceramide and phosphatidylcholine.
