FABP2 and Heat Stroke: Given that (1) reduced splanchnic blood flow and subsequent bacteremia initiate heat stroke in animal models [19,20,25,51,52,55,56], (2) gastrointestinal barrier function is reduced with aging [29,30,31,53], and (3) heat exposure elevated I-FABP in older people but not younger people in our study, future work investigating if older individuals are susceptible to this pathophysiology during heat waves is justified.
