SSTR2 and coronary atherosclerosis: DOTATATE has been used successfully to image inflammation within atherosclerotic plaques, with excellent macrophage specificity (r = 0.89, 95% confidence interval 0.28–0.99, for SSTR2 gene expression that is seen exclusively in pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages) and superior performance compared to FDG in terms of imaging coronary atherosclerosis (where DOTATATE uptake was seen only in the atherosclerotic plaque and recently infarcted myocardium, but not diffusely within the myocardium as seen with FDG) [86,87].
